Violet Hour
Violet Hour takes its name from the brief stretch of dusk when daylight drains from a forest and everything turns blue and purple. Dozens of slender trunks rise edge to edge across the canvas in violet, cobalt, ice blue, silver, white and black, standing so close together that the woods read as a single wall of color.
Each trunk carries its own surface. Some are scraped into rough bark, others are poured glassy and smooth, catching light like wet wood after rain. Between them, narrow strips of bare linen in warm brown and rust show through, the last warmth in the cooling air.
The trunks lean and sway as they climb, so the stand never feels still. One deep blue form cuts diagonally across the others, a single gesture of motion within the vertical rhythm.
At six feet tall, the painting holds a viewer the way a grove does: close, enveloping and quiet. It is less a picture of trees than the feeling of standing among them as night arrives.
